WhatsApp, Instagram or website chat? How to pick an AI messaging tool in 2026

Most businesses pick a chat tool by comparing feature lists. The better question is simpler: where do your customers already message you?

An AI agent that answers questions brilliantly on your website is no help if your customers only ever reach you on WhatsApp. And a tool built for Instagram automation won't put a chat box on your site. So before you compare prices, work out your main channel. Then pick from the tools that users say are genuinely strong there.

Below is what real users report, channel by channel. Everything comes from verified reviews and independent pricing breakdowns we checked in October 2026, and each tool name links to its full evidence page.

If customers mostly message you on WhatsApp

WhatsApp-first businesses need two things: a shared inbox so your team doesn't miss chats, and automation that works inside WhatsApp itself. Remember that Meta charges its own fees for many WhatsApp business conversations, on top of whatever the tool costs.

  • WATI is built around WhatsApp. Users like its code-free chatbots and broadcast campaigns, but some report slowness and mostly automated support. From about $59 a month.
  • respond.io is a team inbox for WhatsApp and many other channels. Users praise how easy it is to learn and how responsive support is, but say it's costly for small teams and that AI agents need a higher plan. From $99 a month.
  • ManyChat supports WhatsApp from its Pro plan (about $29 a month). It's strongest for sales and broadcasts rather than support.

If customers find you on Instagram and Facebook

For businesses that sell through social media, the standout feature users mention is automation that turns comments into private messages and then into sales.

  • ManyChat is the name users mention most for Instagram comment-to-DM automation, and they like its drag-and-drop builder. The warning: costs grow with your audience, and it scores just 2.1 of 5 on Trustpilot, mostly over billing and support.
  • Tidio and Gorgias both bring Instagram and Facebook messages into one inbox alongside your other channels, which suits businesses that also have a website.

If customers come to your website

Here the AI agent matters most: it answers questions about prices, delivery or opening hours while you're busy or asleep.

  • Tidio is rated 4.7 of 5 from 590 Capterra reviews. Users say it's live within a day and its AI, Lyro, handles repetitive questions well. Watch the add-ons, which push the real cost above the base price.
  • Crisp has a free plan for basic chat, and its AI agent starts on the $45 plan. Users like that you can set a spending cap, so AI costs never run away.
  • Chatbase learns from your own documents and can be live within minutes. Users mention limits on messages and training data, and uneven support.
  • Intercom is the polished choice for software companies with a strong help centre. Its AI, Fin, charges $0.99 per resolved conversation on top of seat fees, and users' top complaint is cost.

If you need all of them

Many businesses get messages everywhere. In that case, look for a tool users rate highly for its single inbox: respond.io, Crisp (multi-channel on the $95 plan), Tidio or, for Shopify stores, Gorgias.

Three mistakes users warn about

  1. Judging by the starting price. AI conversations, add-ons and extra seats are often billed separately. Users of Tidio, Intercom and Gorgias all mention bills that ended up higher than expected.
  2. Expecting the AI to know your business on day one. AI agents answer from what you give them. Users of Intercom's Fin in particular note that good results depend on well-written help articles.
  3. Ignoring support. When a tool breaks, you need help fast. Several tools here are criticised for slow or automated-only support on cheaper plans.
